John began his career in tax as an unenrolled preparer in 1990 doing 1989 returns “by hand.” Over the course of 30+ years, John has prepared over 10,000 tax returns. After graduating number one in his law school class in Guadalajara, Mexico John returned to the Houston area sitting for the Enrolled Agent exam, passing on the first try in 2015. John currently handles a wide variety of tax controversy matters involving serial non-filers, IRS Examinations, IRS Collections, IRS Appeals and Tax Court Litigation. John has handled over $100 Million in tax controversy matters in his career. Most recently, John passed the California Bar Exam and in 2024 he was one of only ten people in the United States to pass the United States Tax Court admission exam (out of 163 test takers). John is a best-selling author and has written in national tax journals as well as having been a radio and television talk show host and on-air contributor speaking on tax matters. John is also a nationally-known public speaker having spoken for the NAEA, NATP, Texas Society of Enrolled Agents, Michigan Society of Enrolled Agents, and the Internal Revenue Service. He also is the host of the Tax Pro Podcast. John speaks Spanish at a native-speaker level and in his down time he enjoys books, movies, music and spending time with family. He is a husband, father of two, stepfather of two, and grandfather of two.

Currently serving as a Tax Consultant at J Mitchell Law Firm, PC, Cay provides tailored tax strategies and compliance solutions for individuals and businesses, drawing on a strong background in accounting and law.

Prior to joining J Mitchell Law Firm, Cay worked as a Retirement Plan Specialist with Retirement Education Partners, Inc., where she specialized in helping educators and non-profit organizations design and optimize their retirement programs. Her career also includes leadership roles with Equis Financial, Family First Life, and Symmetry Financial Group, where she focused on life insurance, mortgage protection, final expense coverage, and retirement planning. Throughout her career, Cay has demonstrated a commitment to protecting families’ financial futures while mentoring agents to achieve financial independence.

Cay holds a Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Her unique blend of legal expertise and financial acumen allows her to deliver comprehensive, client-centered solutions. Cay actively collaborates with industry leaders and welcomes new opportunities to network and innovate in the financial services space.
